A New Home for My Photography
It’s well and truly autumn, and we’ve been able to enjoy the beautiful weather for quite a while. It felt more like summer than autumn, but I haven’t been out and about as much as I usually would. Instead, I’ve been busy setting up this new website and slowly giving my photography a new home. I’ve also moved my stories from earlier this year over to this website, adding more photos from each day along the way. Not just the best ones, but also some of the less successful ones. I think it’s nice to show the reality of photography too, because when you’re taking photos yourself, not every image turns out the way you hoped. And, of course, photography is very personal. What I love, someone else might not care for at all, and the other way around. You might even look at a photo and think it’s amazing, while I’m not particularly happy with it. That’s what makes photography so much fun, though. We all see things a little differently.
The reason I decided to move my website is that I wanted to make the switch to a fully English website. On my old website, I was already getting quite a few visitors from outside the Netherlands, so it felt like a natural step to make everything English. I also have to admit that I was struggling with WordPress more and more. You need quite a few plugins to get everything working the way you want, and these days, with AI, it seems like almost anyone can create and upload a plugin, even without really knowing how to code. Then you run into plugins that stop working after an update, or things that suddenly don't work well together. And my old theme and I were definitely not the best of friends anymore. We seemed to be fighting with each other more often than not.
So I decided to move to Squarespace. It isn’t perfect either, of course, and there are still things I would love to be able to change or do differently. But I’m not a programmer, and expecting myself to design and build an entire website from scratch, with everything I want on it, would probably be asking a little too much. Here, I can simply focus on what I actually enjoy: making things, sharing my adventures, and most of all, sharing my passion for photography. That’s really what I want this website to be about.
I also made a conscious decision to move away from a .nl domain and use a .com instead. Since the website is now completely in English and I’m hoping to share my photography with people from all over the world, a .com just felt like a better fit.
As you can see, the website is still very much a work in progress. The gallery still needs to be filled, and I have quite a lot of photos waiting to be edited. For some of my adventures, I also made a vlog, simply because I enjoy being able to look back on those moments myself later. I’ll be working on all of this over the coming weeks, so you definitely still have a few more adventures from me to look forward to. And in time, I’ll be adding some personal photography projects as well. These are ideas I’ve come up with for myself that still need to be brought to life and filled with photos and stories. There’s still plenty to do, but I’m enjoying the process of building this little place for my photography, one story and one photograph at a time.
